Checkpointing Workflows à la Young/Daly Is Not Good Enough

چکیده

This article revisits checkpointing strategies when workflows composed of multiple tasks execute on a parallel platform. The objective is to minimize the expectation total execution time. For single task, Young/Daly formula provides optimal period. However, many simultaneously, risk that one them severely delayed increases with number tasks. To mitigate this risk, possibility checkpoint each task more often than strategy. But it worth slowing down extra checkpoints? Does make difference globally? answers these questions. On theoretical side, we prove several negative results for keeping period concurrently, and design novel guarantee an efficient high probability. practical report comprehensive experiments demonstrate need go beyond wide range application/platform settings.

Growth Is Good, but Is Not Enough to Improve Nutrition

While it is generally agreed that growth is a necessary precondition for reducing poverty, relatively little is known about the relationship between economic growth and nutrition and, hence, how economic policies can be leveraged to improve nutrition. This chapter argues that growth is good, but is not enough to improve nutrition. During the early stages of development, growth helps reduce the ...

“ Good Enough ” is not Good Enough : Challenges of Social Interaction in Video - Mediated Telepresence

As video-mediated communication reaches broad adoption, improving immersion and social interaction are important areas of focus in the design of tools for exploration and work-based communication. Here we present three threads of research focused on developing new ways of enabling exploration of a remote environment and interacting with the people and artifacts therein.

Is Good Enough?

Hadoop is currently the large-scale data analysis ‘‘hammer’’ of choice, but there exist classes of algorithms that aren’t ‘‘nails’’ in the sense that they are not particularly amenable to the MapReduce programming model. To address this, researchers have proposed MapReduce extensions or alternative programming models in which these algorithms can be elegantly expressed. This article espouses a ...

Determining Relevance: Close Enough is Good Enough

Humans exhibit characteristic success in considering what is relevant in their cognitive tasks. Yet understanding how relevance is determined in cognition remains a problem. This paper seeks to make headway on this problem. The relevance problem is first introduced. Sperber and Wilson’s influential theory of relevance is then discussed, but dismissed as inadequate. Some conditions are identifie...
